Texas’ Educational Landscape and Opportunities

Excel High School is currently in the process of becoming an approved education provider for the Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) program. While approval is determined by the State of Texas and is not guaranteed, we want families to have clear, up-to-date information about how the TEFA application process works and what to expect if they choose to apply. The details below outline key application steps and timelines set by the state to help parents plan ahead.

Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) Application Timeline

Parent Application Window

  • Parents apply directly through the State of Texas, not through schools.
  • The TEFA parent application window opens February 4, 2026.
  • Applications must be submitted by March 17, 2026.
  • Applying during the open window is important, as funding is limited and priority rules may apply.

Notification of Funding Status

  • Families will be notified of their TEFA funding status beginning in early April 2026.
  • Approval is not guaranteed and depends on state program rules and available funding.
  • Approved families may move forward with selecting an education provider.

When TEFA Funds Become Available

  • July 1, 2026: At least 25% of approved funds are expected to be available in student accounts.
  • October 1, 2026: At least 50% of approved funds are expected to be available.
  • April 1, 2027: Remaining approved funds are expected to be released.
  • Funds are distributed in phases to support students throughout the academic year.

Helpful Reminder for Families

  • TEFA rules and timelines are set by the State of Texas and may change.
  • Families should monitor official state updates and apply as early as possible during the application window.
  • Schools do not control application decisions or funding approvals.
