Course Description

Earth and Space Science at Excel High School offers an in-depth exploration of our planet’s systems and their interactions within the broader universe. Designed for high school students, typically in 9th grade, this self-paced online course integrates geology, oceanography, meteorology, astronomy, and environmental science to build a comprehensive understanding of Earth’s processes and their impact on life.

Students examine the cycles of matter and energy, the formation and evolution of Earth, and the influence of human activities on natural systems. Through 11 thematic modules, learners analyze geologic and climatic history, model Earth’s systems, investigate natural resources, explore the solar system, and evaluate environmental challenges.

Each module includes engaging multimedia lessons, interactive activities, and NGSS-aligned assessments to strengthen scientific reasoning and problem-solving skills. Emphasis is placed on connecting theory to real-world applications, encouraging students to think critically about sustainability and Earth stewardship. By the end of the course, students will be prepared for further study in Earth sciences, environmental studies, or related STEM fields.

Recommended Prerequisites

Carnegie Credits Explained: Our Approach vs. Trimester Credits

Carnegie Credit System
Excel High School follows the Carnegie Credit system, a widely recognized method of measuring student progress based on instructional hours. A single Carnegie credit reflects approximately 120 hours of coursework, typically completed over a full academic year.

Carnegie Credit vs. Trimester Credit
While Carnegie credits are awarded based on total hours over a year, trimester credits divide the school year into three terms. In a trimester system, students complete courses in shorter, intensive sessions, often earning partial credits (e.g., 0.33 or 0.5 per term). In contrast, Excel’s use of Carnegie credits ensures students have ample time to engage deeply with the material and develop a well-rounded understanding at a consistent pace.
