Emergency Medical Responder Syllabus


This course provides an overview of the emergency medical services system and some of the responsibilities of an emergency medical responder. Students will learn some of the most important assessments and treatments performed by emergency medical responders and gain an appreciation of the thought and care that goes into providing immediate lifesaving care to critical patients.

Course objectives:

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

  • • List the ways in which emergency medical responders must protect themselves in emegencies.
  • • Identify major systems of the human body and their functions.
  • • Describe the steps performed in patient assessments.
  • • Recall the signs and symptoms of common EMS emergencies.
  • • Explain some of the main responsibilities of an emergency medical responder (such as managing oxygen therapy, performing CPR, and using an AED).
