Summer Is Coming! Avoid The Summer Slide

Ah, summer! Time for the kids to put away their schoolwork and stare at a screen…or two…or three for the next couple of months. Of course, if you want to avoid the summer slide where your children lose some of their academic progress and just sort of let their brains atrophy for the summer, then you might need to get creative with your approach. Giving teens a way to use some of their time constructively can help your children keep their brains fresh and active until school starts.

Flexible Options

Excel High School offers some options to keep your high school students engaged this summer. Students can easily enroll in an individual course and complete it 100% online and according to their own schedule. As long as they stay on track and focused, they can finish their assignments and take the final exam 60 days after enrolling in the class.

Because our classes are self-paced and online, students don’t have to put aside summer travel to complete our classes. They can work on our courses anywhere that they have an internet connection. This means they can still see family or visit with friends while keeping their brains engaged enough to avoid the summer slide.

Core Classes

If they need to catch up with or want to get ahead of their graduation requirements, we offer all of the traditional core classes: English 9-12, public speaking, social studies classes, and a variety of sciences. Because these are required classes, it’s best to complete them as quickly as possible so that Excel can make sure your student’s transcript is sent to their school in time for classes at the beginning of the school year.

Elective Options

Summer can also be the perfect opportunity for your kids to explore their interests. Excel has a variety of interesting elective courses that your student can work through to check out possible career interests. From Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering to Sports Medicine, Forensic Science, or Introduction to Coding, we’ve got a lot of options for students to explore. Since students have 12 full months to complete their courses, your student can finish any of these electives quickly or take their time.

SAT Prep

If your student is getting ready to take the College Board’s SAT, then another great option we offer is our SAT Prep Course. Covering either or both the English and Math portions of the test, your student can take their time during summer to review and prepare for this standardized test. Since they have a year to complete the full course once they are enrolled in it, it’s a great course for sophomores to take to get ready for the test or for juniors to take who want to retake the exam for a better score.

Train the Brain

Another option is to engage your student in summer tutoring. Train the Brain is an online tutoring, homework help, or standardized test prep service that offers one-on-one tutoring completely online. If your student struggled in any classes during the past school year or if you just want them to start next year off on the right foot, then scheduling some individual tutoring is an effective way to make that happen.
