In 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait, prompting very strong criticism from the international community. After Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein ignored a United Nations (UN) order to withdraw, the UN Security Council authorized the use of force. In 1991 the United States military led the UN allies in the attack, also known as Operation Desert Storm. The ground offensive lasted less than a week and forced Iraq to leave Kuwait. The war carried heavy casualties for Iraqi troops. At least 8,000 soldiers died in the conflict. The Allies lost about 300 soldiers.
